This was the first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic that our sorority was able to host in-person recruitment events, so it was important for us to have a successful (and safe!) recruitment cycle. As the sorority’s recruitment chair, I knew I wanted our recruitment theme to be something fun and effortless that still accurately promoted our sorority’s values. Thus, we opened Sigma Store!
The previous recruitment cycle was really difficult for us to plan and execute as it was fully remote due to the pandemic. As such, we knew that this year’s recruitment had to be successful and take advantage of the fact that we were finally able to be together in-person again.
Being an Asian/Asian American interest sorority, I aimed for our recruitment theme to celebrate our Asian/Asian American identity while conveying a strong sense of sisterhood and fun. Thus, I proposed the Sigma Store concept because I believed it would 1) be an enjoyable theme for both our current sisters and potential new members, and 2) provide excellent material for graphics and promotions.
Sigma Store mind map
For our photoshoot, I opted for film, specifically disposable film cameras, because disposables are very forgiving and give off the trendy, candid, and effortless vibe that Sigma Store was needed. We took the photos in a Super H-Mart by distributing a couple of disposable cameras amongst the entire sorority.
After I got the photos back from the film lab, I added noodles on each photo using the Sketchpad app on my iPad for that extra sense of sisterhood and fun.
Continuing the Sigma Store concept, I made individual graphics for each of our 6 recruitment events. Each illustration is based on an iconic Asian snack and contained the information for each event. When choosing which snacks to feature, I made sure to select easily recognizable snacks from across Asia that represented a variety of colors.
I then worked with another member for the flyer and more detailed event graphics. Because these were essentially our main recruitment graphics, we needed to include a lot more details and follow strict guidelines set by Sigma Psi Zeta's National Board in order for us to get the approval to post and distribute them.
The Winter 2022 recruitment cycle was really fun but also stressful. We were still in the midst of COVID-19, so navigating the hybrid recruitment format added an extra layer of complexity. Additionally, our planning timeline was unexpected shorted due to a change in the school's first day of classes, which required me to adjust event dates, reschedule with speakers, correct graphics, as well as communicate those changes with all parties involved. During those stressful moments, I learned the importance of timely communication and asking for help when needed. It was heartening to discover that people are oftentimes more willing to assist than expected, especially with clear and prompt communication.
Overall, the Winter 2022 recruitment cycle was a great success, and I'm incredibly proud of the outcome. We not only doubled our chapter size but also experienced record engagement on Instagram and received positive feedback from new members, other chapters, and our National Board. Most importantly, every member had a fun and fulfilling experience throughout the process, which was the ultimate goal. I learned a lot through this experience, and I’m extremely grateful for all the help I received along the way :)
